Despite millions of dollars invested in curriculum development, classroom and instructional lab equipment, career exploration initiatives, and the dedicated efforts of teachers, STEM department chairs, CTE administrators, and school board leaders, many boys are not thriving in STEM and CTE programs. Long before COVID-19, data revealed concerning declines in engagement, persistence, and learning among boys—trends that continue to pose one of the most significant challenges facing schools today.
Join us for a virtual conversation with Richard V. Reeves to explore why boys are struggling and what can be done to address this issue. Dr. Reeves has spent decades researching the education system and workforce participation of men and boys. During this session, he will share key findings from his work and offer practical, research-informed strategies that educators and school leaders can apply to better support boys’ success.
Dr. Reeves will be introduced by Claudia Morrell, co-founder of the STEM Educator Initiative (SEI). SEI’s mission is to foster learning environments that more effectively engage all students, strengthen academic achievement in STEM courses and programs, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and promote a lifelong love of learning.
Who Should Attend:
STEM and CTE teachers, program administrators, principals, and school district leaders (including school board members) will all find value in this session.
Our Presenter:
Dr. Richard V. Reeves, formerly a senior fellow with the Brookings Institution, is presently the founder and president of the American Institute for Boys and Men (AIBM). While at Brookings, he focused on policies related to economic inequality, racial justice, social mobility, and boys and men. Reeves is the author of several books, including “Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male is Struggling, Why it Matters, and What to do About It” and “Dream Hoarders: How the American Upper Class Is Leaving Everyone Else in the Dust, Why That is a Problem, and What to do About It.” In his work, Reeves has been inspired by his own experiences as a father and policy expert. He founded AIBM in 2023 to bring awareness to the challenges facing boys and men today and to develop evidence-based solutions.
Our Facilitator:
Dr. Dail has designed and managed job skills training initiatives as a community college leader for more than 20 years.
